Reading for today
Old Testament: Nehemiah 5, 6, 7
New Testament: 1 Corinthians 7
Thoughts from today’s reading
Nehemiah 6. The enemies of the Jews tried all kinds of schemes to discourage them and keep their work from being completed. They tried calling for a consensus meeting but the aim was to kill Nehemiah. They tried sending false prophets with prophesies to create fear. As the Jews resisted all these and kept building, their enemies became disheartened when they saw the walls completed.
We need to press through every discouraging circumstance, and the ones trying to hinder us will eventually fall into the pit of discouragement they were digging for us.
1 Corinthians 7:17-24. Our relationship with God and calling from Him is the most important thing we are to maintain. So, in the midst of all the other important things we must work out in our lives like marriage, religious commitments, work etc. we should never let them be a distraction to obeying God’s commands to us.
1. Lord, you have not give us a spirit of fear, but of power, love and a sound mind. In the midst of discouraging and disheartening events triggered by the enemy of our soul and the men he uses, we rise above it by the power of Christ. We declare that our hands are strengthened to finish the work you have committed to us for greater is He who has began a good work in us, than he who is in the world. Therefore, our hands that have started on projects, enterprises, businesses, ministry and family will be the hands that finish it.
2. Father, may we not be distracted by the various vicissitudes of life that are necessary but not more important than our relationship with you. Help us to put things in perspective and in their right place so that we are not hindered from fulfilling your purpose for our lives. We ask this in Jesus’ name, amen.
