Reading for today
Old Testament: Genesis 25, 26, 27
New Testament: Matthew 9
Thoughts from today’s reading
Genesis 25:21-23. Rebekah was barren and Isaac prayed for her which led to the end of her barrenness. When Rebekah was pregnant, she had problems with the pregnancy, this time we see that she is praying for herself and what is in her womb. God answers her prayers telling her what the problem is and giving her insight to what will happen in the future for the twins in her womb.
There are times we need others to pray for us, but the prayers we pray for ourselves deepens our relationship with God and He is able to clearly give us insight into His plan for our lives.
Genesis 27:5-10. What God spoke to Rebekah in Genesis 25 stayed with her, and years later she was ready to act on that prophecy. Isaac would have given the blessing to Esau, but Rebekah was quick to advise Jacob on what he needed to do to get the blessing.
Esau had sold his birthright to Jacob which meant that the blessing of the father was meant for him, but Esau failed to declare this transaction to his father and wanted to eat his cake (pottage) and have it.
God gives us words of prophecy but we must seize the opportunity when it arises for that prophecy to be fulfilled. It’s like the prophecy pre informs us of what we should be looking out for. You cannot get a prophecy and go to sleep or keep it under a bushel, you must actively look out for the opportunity for its fulfilment.
Prayers
- Sometimes problems are an opportunity for God to get our attention. Take the time to pray for yourself on any challenging issues you have right now. Ask God to give you insights on how to deal with the issue now, and receive prophecies for what He wants to do next in your life.
- Ask for the grace to recognise the opportunities God brings for prophecies to be fulfilled in your life. Pray for the wisdom and strength of the Holy Spirit to act in such situations.
