Reading for today
Old Testament: Proverbs 21, 22, 23
New Testament: Hebrews 13
Thoughts from today’s reading
Proverbs 23:6-8. The one who has an evil eye says one thing but is thinking the opposite, so if you go by what they say you will be deceived. Jesus compares the one with an evil eye with the one with a single eye in Matthew 6:22-23. A single eye says what is consistent with how they think and they will be full of light. An evil eye is the double minded, double tongued, hypocritical person and they are full of darkness.
Hebrews 13:5-6. God Himself has given us a guarantee which should keep us content in every area of our lives. He says He will never leave us nor forsake us, so we have no need to fear for what man can do. Prophet Elisha knew this and he was not moved when surrounded by an army which came to arrest him because he saw that there were chariots of fire from the Lord with him. Moses and the children of Israel had food in the desert because God was with them and sent manna. Apostle Peter’s mother-in-law was raised from the bed of sickness because Jesus was in their house. If God is with us, then who or what can be against us?
Prayer
1. Lord, you have made us the children of light and you expect us to walk in the light where we think and say the same things according to your word. Father, we pray that you deliver us from falling prey to an evil eye, from being double minded or double tongued. May we walk honestly and sincerely with all men and speak the truth even when it is not popular. Thank you Lord for giving us strength of character in all we do.
2. Father, we praise you for the precious promise of your presence with us at all times. What a comfort we have knowing that you are our friend that sticks closer than a brother. Today, we banish all forms of fear, fear of the unknown, fear of the future, fear of lack, fear of sickness, fear of death, anxiety, low self-esteem, discouragement and doubts. We boldly declare, if God is for us, who can be against us! Our God is on our side, therefore we are helped, we are established and we are lifted, in Jesus’ name, amen.
