Reading for today
Old Testament: Jeremiah 36, 37, 38, 39
Thoughts from today’s reading
Jeremiah 38:4-13. The princes of Judah requested that the king should imprison Jeremiah because they did not like the words of his prophecy which did not favour them. By fighting against the prophet, they were resisting and fighting against God. Ebed-Melech, the Ethiopian, rescued Jeremiah by also petitioning the king to take him out of the dungeon so he would not die. In Jeremiah 39:16-18, the Lord sent a word to Ebed-Melech to promise him safety from all the trouble to come because of his trust in the Lord. His trust was demonstrated in him going against the princes of the land to request Jeremiah’s freedom, even though he was the outsider or foreigner in Israel, he still spoke up for what was right.
Prayer
1. Father, may we always take a stand with your truth and with those who speak truth in your name. May we speak up where we see others being oppressed, and may we be willing to put ourselves out there to rescue them. May we be your hands and feet that proclaim the good news of the kingdom of God through Jesus Christ, and even when we are persecuted for it, may we remain faithful to keep speaking this truth no matter the oppositions we face.
