Reading for today
Old Testament: 2 Samuel 4, 5, 6
New Testament: Acts 2
Thoughts from today’s reading
2 Samuel 6:1-10. David went to bring the ark of the Lord from the house of Abinadab to the city of Jerusalem, but while they carried it on a cart Uzzah tried to steady it and the Lord struck him so he died. David was trying to do a good thing but it seems that the results turned out badly. With God, He is not interested in the good things we try to do, but the right things. Just because it was good to take the ark to Jerusalem, it did not make it right to do so in a way contrary to Gods instruction. The ark was only meant to be carried on the shoulders of chosen priests and not on carts.
Acts 2:17-21. As Jesus promised in Acts 1, the Holy Spirit came on all the disciples who were in the upper room and they were filled with the power of God. Peter then exhorts the people who were gathered to them about why we have been given the Holy Spirit. By the Holy Spirit, we will prophesy, see visions, dream, see signs and wonders, be prepared for the great and awesome day of the Lord, call upon the name of the Lord for salvation.
Prayer
1. Father, may we understand that you have called us to righteousness which is about doing things your way and in your time. As David realised, may we also keep it in our minds that doing good things does not mean doing God’s thing. We thank you for the Holy Spirit that leads us and guides us to the right way of serving you in Jesus’ name. Amen.
2. Thank you Lord for pouring out your Spirit upon us. Thank you for all the manifestations of the Spirit that has been given to us. May we keep prophesying, dreaming, seeing visions, seeing your signs and wonders and understanding the times and seasons we are in so that we can effectively call on the name of the Lord for safety. Thank you Father for your Holy Spirit in Jesus’ name. Amen.
